Five Questions to Ask Before Hiring Newborn Support
Use these five conversations to evaluate experience, safety practices, responsibilities, communication, scheduling, and whether a caregiver is the right fit for your family.
Choosing someone to care for your newborn is one of the most personal decisions you will make as a new parent. The right support can transform your first weeks at home—bringing rest, reassurance, and a sense of calm. The wrong fit can add stress you simply don't need.
1. What experience do you have with newborns?
Ask specifically about overnight care, multiples, feeding support, and any special-needs experience. A caregiver with hospital postpartum experience brings a clinical foundation that can be invaluable in those early days.
2. What does a typical overnight look like?
You want to understand how they structure the night—feeds, diapering, soothing, settling, and when (and how) they'll wake you. Clear expectations prevent misunderstandings at 3 a.m.
3. How do you handle feeding preferences?
Whether you're breastfeeding, pumping, formula-feeding, or combination feeding, your caregiver should support your choice without pressure or judgment.
4. What are your safety practices?
Ask about safe sleep, CPR certification, hand hygiene, and how they handle emergencies. A professional caregiver will welcome these questions.
5. How do we handle communication and scheduling?
Discuss availability, advance booking, backup coverage, and how you'll communicate day-to-day. A clear agreement protects both your family and the caregiver.
Taking the time to ask these questions helps you find care that truly fits your family's needs—and gives you the confidence to rest, knowing your baby is in capable hands.
